For college and university students to take part in e-learning in an active way, learning materials can be transferred from the senses to the sensory store and then to working memory. The amount of information transferred to working memory depends on the amount of attention that was paid to the incoming information. To this end, e-learning instructors must take responsibility for their students’ cognitive abilities so that they can process the information in the right way. If there are gaps in students’ abilities or learning processes, adaptations of the materials must be made.


Research has shown that the duration of a student’s normal working memory is approximately twenty seconds. If information is not processed efficiently, that information is not able to be transferred to long-term memory. To this end, online learning strategies need to organize information in pieces of appropriate size to facilitate processing, and into meaningful sequences. Five to nine meaningful units of information are needed in order to compensate for the limited capacity of short-term memory, according to research in the field.


For example, if a professor were to ask a student to write a persuasive essay on a topic covered in class, then the student would have the opportunity to learn the basic information about the topic, and then pursue additional research that allowed for a deeper consideration of the issues. The deeper the processing function, the more associations that the acquired new information forms in the synaptic processes of memory, and therefore the more effective the e-learning framework.
