All college and university students have different learning styles, which means that e-learners should be able to select appropriate activities based on their preferred style. This article will explain how learning styles and e-learning can be connected for student success.

 

First, concrete-experience students prefer specific examples, and they relate to peers rather than to people in authority. They like to participate in group work and benefit from peer feedback. These students see the instructor as their coach or helper.

 

Second, reflective-observation students are those who prefer to observe the learning environment carefully before taking any action. They want to ensure that all the information in the course is available for learning at the beginning of their participation. They are more likely to see the instructor as the expert and avoid peer interaction.

 

Third, abstract-conceptualization students are those who like to work more with things and symbols. They enjoy the use of theory and systematic analyses of the information in the course.

 

Finally, active-experimentation students prefer to learn through active or practical projects and through group discussions. These students want to interact with peers for feedback and course information.

 

Adequate support systems should be provided by instructors for students with different learning styles. For example, as noted above, assimilators prefer a high instructor presence, while accommodators are more likely to prefer low instructor presence. Where it is possible, textual, verbal, and visual forms of information should be offered to students to build on their different learning processes in order to succeed in the course.
