E-Learning Materials at the College Level

Before any learning materials are developed for e-learning students at the college and university level, educators must, whether it be tacitly or explicitly, know the principles of learning and how students learn. This is especially true for online learning, where the instructor and the learner are physically separated.

 

Three main goals should govern planning:
1. Learners should be told the explicit outcomes of the learning so that they can set expectations and can judge whether or not they have achieved the right outcome.
2. Learners must be tested to determine whether or not they have achieved their goals.
3. Online assessment should be integrated into the learning sequence to check the learner's achievement level and to provide appropriate feedback.

 

To meet these goals, the design of the course and the way in which students and instructors are supported in their interaction should determine the effectiveness of the learning effort. For example, if an e-learning professor wants the student to be able to write a persuasive essay, he or she needs to not only be told how to do so, but there should be an interactive opportunity planned so that students may be able to ask questions.

 

Ultimately, an online curriculum creator must know the different approaches to learning in order to select the most appropriate instructional strategies. To this end, learning strategies should be selected to motivate each learner on an independent level, facilitate deep materials processing, build student success, cater for individual student differences, promote meaningful learning, encourage interaction, provide feedback, facilitate new forms of contextual learning, and provide support.
